Every day people all over the world make different types of journeys – on land, on sea and in the air. To make these journeys we have invented lots of different ways of getting from A to B. 

It’s... From A to B

 

In Geography, we’ll be finding out:

  • How we travel to school
  • How to make maps to record our journey to school
  • How to create our own train journey around the host country
  • How we can travel to different countries
  • How to create our own activity holiday

 

In History, we’ll be finding out:

  • About transport in the past
  • How to make a timeline to show when different types of transport were invented
  • About exploring different types of transport from myths and legends

 

 In Art, we’ll be finding out:

  • How to create our own futurist painting to capture the speed and movement of transport
  • How to create a boat collage in the style of Turner and Monet

 

In Science, we’ll be finding out:

  • How to make our own sail boats and aeroplanes

 

In Technology, we’ll be finding out:

  • How to make a ‘vehicle’ to transport a small toy from one place to another
  • How to make plans for vehicles
  • How to test our vehicles to see how well they work

 

In Music, we’ll be finding out:

  • About the sounds different types of transport make
  • How to create our own ‘sound journey’

 

In Society, we’ll be finding out:

  • How to cross roads safely
  • About bicycle and road safety
  • About people with restricted mobility

 

In ICT & Computing, we’ll be finding out:

  • How to create a simple algorithm
  • How to program Bee-bots to follow precise instructions
  • About multi-player online gaming and how to stay safe online

 

In International, we’ll be finding out:

  • How children around the world travel to school

Later on in Year Two...

 

There are structures around us all the time, some of which we barely notice. What are they made from? What is their purpose? What do you notice about their shapes? What can be done to make them stronger? Through this unit you will become builders and discover the secrets to holding up bridges and skyscrapers.

It’s... Buildings!

 

In Art, we’ll be finding out:

  • How to draw pictures of local buildings
  • How to make and decorate models of buildings
  • How to make prints

 

In History, we’ll be finding out:

  • How buildings were made in the past
  • How buildings have been used in the past
  • How people travelled in the past

 

In Geography, we’ll be finding out:

  • About different houses, homes and other buildings around the world
  • How to use maps and atlases to locate the different countries these buildings are in

 

In Music, we’ll be finding out:

  • About the structures of tunes and songs
  • About comparing our own music

 

In Physical Education, we’ll be finding out:

  • About different ways to balance
  • About making shapes with our bodies

 

In Technology, we’ll be finding out:

  • How to make picture frames
  • How to make models of houses
  • How to make a slider mechanism

 

In Science, we’ll be finding out:

  • How to test the strengths of structures
  • About materials used in structures

 

In International, we’ll be finding out:

  • About the different houses people live in, in different countries

and then...

 

Toys come in many shapes and sizes. They are made of different materials but all are designed for us to have fun with, to learn new skills and to exercise our bodies and our imagination.

 

 

It’s... The Magic Toymaker

 

In History, we’ll be finding out:

  • About toys and games from the past
  • How to decide if a toy is new or old
  • How to create our own toy museum
  • How we can learn about the past in different ways

 

 In Science, we’ll be finding out:

  • How to sort toys based on what they are made out of
  • Which materials can be bent, squashed, twisted or stretched
  • What materials are best for making a bath toy
  • About pushes and pulls, and how things move

 

In Technology, we’ll be finding out:

  • About ‘magic’ toys that fool our eyes
  • How to design and make our own board game
  • How to design and make our own puppets

 

In Physical Education, we’ll be finding out:

  • About how different toys move
  • How to attack and defend

 

In ICT & Computing, we’ll be finding out:

  • How to make our own space-themed computer game

 

In International, we’ll be finding out:

  • About a popular game from another country and teaching others to play it

...and finally

 

To step back in time we have to become a history detective. We have to find and solve the clues to unlock the mysteries and meaning of past events.

It’s... Time Travellers

 

In History, we’ll be finding out:

  • How to create a timeline
  • About events that are important to us
  • How to use objects to find out more about an event
  • About important events that happened in our local area
  • How we can find out about an event by interviewing someone who was there
  • How to use different sources to learn about a national event
  • About events of global significance by asking and answering questions

 

In Physical Education, we'll be finding out:

  • How to perform a traditional dance
  • How to create a dance

 

In Technology, we'll be finding out:

  • About favourite meals from 50 years ago
  • About food groups and healthy eating
  • Where food comes from

 

In International, we’ll be finding out:

  • About different festivals from around the world
  • How we can compare different festivals from around the world
