Attendance at TJ

At Thomas Jolyffe Primary School we strive for excellence across all areas in our school, and this includes having a high expectation for our pupils' attendance.

Importance of good attendance

In recent years, attendance has been highlighted as critically important to your child(ren) being given the very best opportunities to achieve and succeed, academically as well as socially and emotionally. The attached registration certificate shows your child’s current attendance and the table below shows the impact of that attendance figure, positive or negative, on their education. If children are not in school, they are not learning, however good our curriculum is. Often a child is not achieving simply because they are not attending school regularly enough.

98 – 100% attendance

Excellent – Children are accessing all learning opportunities

96 – 97% attendance

Good – Very few learning opportunities are missed

95% attendance

Satisfactory – Possible risk of underachievement. 9 school days absent in an academic year, which equates to 1 week and 4 days of learning missed.

92 – 94% attendance

Risk of underachievement. Up to 15 school days absent in an academic year, which equates to 3 weeks of learning missed.

80% attendance

Of serious concern – Extreme risk of underachievement. 38 school days missed in an academic year, which equates to 7 weeks and 3 days of learning missed.

75% attendance

Of very serious concern – Extreme risk of underachievement. 46 school days missed in an academic year, which equates to 9 weeks and 1 day of learning missed.

Persistent lateness

We believe in consistent good punctuality and expect parents/carers to make every effort to get their children to school on time every day. Persistent lateness is unacceptable.

The school gates are open early. The school doors open at 8.45am and close at 8.55am prompt. Arrival after 8.55am is marked as late and arrival after 9.25am counts as an unauthorised absence (U code) for the whole morning.

Parental duty

Parents/carers have a duty, under Section 7 of the Education Act 1996, to ensure that their child of compulsory school age (5 to 16 years) receives an efficient full-time education.

Thomas Jolyffe Primary School is determined for all pupils to succeed. Since the previous inspection, many changes have been made. The school has prioritised the development of the curriculum to promote high expectations for all pupils. Staff invest in pupils to build positive relationships with them. Personal development is a strength. The school provides opportunities to enrich pupils’ experiences. Pupils value participating in sporting competitions, such as cross country, football and netball. They also take on positions of responsibility, including school councillors and inclusion champions. Pupils value the leadership skills that they are developing. The school has developed an inclusive environment, where all pupils participate in every aspect of school life. Recently, the school has had a new library. The pupils are very proud of it and say, ‘It is a reading wonderland. It is like walking into another world.’ (OFSTED April 2024)
