Expressive Arts and Design

What is Expressive Arts and Design?

Expressive Arts and Design is one of the seven areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage and provides opportunities to develop a child's imagination, creativity and their ability to use media and materials. Children do this in range of ways including singing songs and making music, dancing, exploring with colours, textures and design. All these approaches to expressive arts  help children to represent and understand their own feelings and ideas.

Here are some ideas for you to enjoy being creative.

Enjoy dancing and singing to your favourite songs.  Play some percussion instruments if you have any, if not could you make some from junk modelling or have a look at the body percussion PowerPoint below.

A few craft ideas!

Role play is really important to develop children's imagination.

Play with your child and encourage them to be whoever or whatever they want to be. They might like to be a pirate...

Or a superhero...

Or maybe dinosaurs are the favourite?

You could use these to pictures to make stick puppets or draw pictures and make some of your own.

Enjoy talking, playing and spending time with your child.

Thomas Jolyffe Primary School is determined for all pupils to succeed. Since the previous inspection, many changes have been made. The school has prioritised the development of the curriculum to promote high expectations for all pupils. Staff invest in pupils to build positive relationships with them. Personal development is a strength. The school provides opportunities to enrich pupils’ experiences. Pupils value participating in sporting competitions, such as cross country, football and netball. They also take on positions of responsibility, including school councillors and inclusion champions. Pupils value the leadership skills that they are developing. The school has developed an inclusive environment, where all pupils participate in every aspect of school life. Recently, the school has had a new library. The pupils are very proud of it and say, ‘It is a reading wonderland. It is like walking into another world.’ (OFSTED April 2024)
