Art is a way of stimulating children’s creativity and imagination through visual, tactile and sensory experiences. It allows children to explore different ways in which mood can be expressed and the chance to study life in different cultures and times. It gives children the opportunity to understand and respond to the world in a unique way and develop their own interpretations.

At Thomas Jolyffe, the children will develop an awareness of the key elements of art: line, shape, colour, texture, form, space and value. The children will then improve their ability to identify these elements through researching and review a wide range of artists and designers, linking to their current topics. Skills demonstrating these elements are then practised and honed and the children are given the opportunity to apply them, using a variety of media. This approach gives the children the subject knowledge and confidence to make autonomous decisions when creating their finished projects.

Thomas Jolyffe Primary School is determined for all pupils to succeed. Since the previous inspection, many changes have been made. The school has prioritised the development of the curriculum to promote high expectations for all pupils. Staff invest in pupils to build positive relationships with them. Personal development is a strength. The school provides opportunities to enrich pupils’ experiences. Pupils value participating in sporting competitions, such as cross country, football and netball. They also take on positions of responsibility, including school councillors and inclusion champions. Pupils value the leadership skills that they are developing. The school has developed an inclusive environment, where all pupils participate in every aspect of school life. Recently, the school has had a new library. The pupils are very proud of it and say, ‘It is a reading wonderland. It is like walking into another world.’ (OFSTED April 2024)
