Hygge in the Early Years Accreditation

Our staff are experienced early years educators who strive to provide the very best experience for children at Thomas Jolyffe.

In the Summer of 2022 we achieved our 'Hygge in the Early Years accredited setting' qualification.

Hygge is the Danish approach to living well that focuses on being in the moment and embracing the feelings of warmth, simplicity and togetherness.

.art of creating a lovely, cosy, safe atmosphere with a calm vibe

.sense of togetherness

.happiness

.sense of community and cooperation

.open and inclusive environment

.wellbeing

Atmosphere. Presence. Pleasure. Togetherness. Gratitude. Harmony. Truce. Comfort. Shelter.

We already had a classroom learning environment to be proud of and together we worked to audit our space to ensure we are promoting the hygge philosophy that we qualified in.

Please check this section regularly as we will be sharing photographs of our hygge environment and the hyggelig activities we have all enjoyed.

Trivsel = wellbeing and how well a child is thriving

Hygge in our environment

In Reception we strive for our environment to feel homely and comfortable so all accessing it have a heightened sense of wellbeing.
For our young children we want them to settle and learn here
and see it as their space.
For the adults we want them to feel comfortable and as though they can be the best version of themselves.

The 5 Pillars of Happiness

Mindfulness ~ Being present in the moment. Why not try a mindfulness app?
Gratitude ~ Being grateful and thinking what are grateful for right now?
Journaling ~ Thinking about the positive experiences you have had during the day.
Act of Kindness ~ We feel and mirror the positive emotion felt by the person we’ve done the act of kindness on.
Exercise ~ When we exercise we release endorphins which further strengthen the positive feel good pathway in the brain.

🌱If we commit to just regularly doing 3 out of 5 of these actions it can increase our overall happiness in life 🌱

Thomas Jolyffe Primary School is determined for all pupils to succeed. Since the previous inspection, many changes have been made. The school has prioritised the development of the curriculum to promote high expectations for all pupils. Staff invest in pupils to build positive relationships with them. Personal development is a strength. The school provides opportunities to enrich pupils’ experiences. Pupils value participating in sporting competitions, such as cross country, football and netball. They also take on positions of responsibility, including school councillors and inclusion champions. Pupils value the leadership skills that they are developing. The school has developed an inclusive environment, where all pupils participate in every aspect of school life. Recently, the school has had a new library. The pupils are very proud of it and say, ‘It is a reading wonderland. It is like walking into another world.’ (OFSTED April 2024)
