Personal Social Health Education

PSHE at Thomas Jolyffe Primary School

At Thomas Jolyffe Primary School, our pupils’ personal, social and emotional development is secured by a supportive school ethos. All are valued and encouraged, positive relationships are seen as important and there is a safe and secure school environment conducive to learning. The children’s wellbeing, happiness and safety are our first priorities. PSHE is one of the key vehicles through which we share this with the children. It also helps give the children the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, safe and independent lives enabling them to become informed, active, responsible British citizens. Our PSHE curriculum enables our children to aspire to our school motto ‘To be the best that we can be’. We believe that PSHE education is key in developing a child’s “whole self” whilst also promoting equity, inclusion and social justice.
Intent
Through our curriculum, our school environment, ethos and the strength of our relationships within school, we strive to promote pupils’ self-esteem, their emotional and physical well-being as well as help them to form and maintain worthwhile and satisfying relationships. Those relationships are based on respect for themselves and for others at home, at school, at work and in the community. We will reach out to parents using technology to enable convenient access to elements of the PSHE curriculum by offering workshops/awareness sessions on specific subject matter i.e. healthy eating, resilience.
Implementation
At Thomas Jolyffe, PSHE is delivered through a carefully structured and inclusive curriculum that places well-being, kindness, care and respect at the heart of everything we do. We believe that children learn best when they feel safe, valued and understood, and our PSHE provision reflects this commitment.
Our core programme is delivered through Jigsaw, which provides a progressive, whole-school approach from Early Years to Year 6. Jigsaw ensures full coverage of statutory Relationships and Health Education while developing emotional literacy, resilience and social skills. Each lesson follows a consistent structure, helping children feel secure and confident in discussing important themes.
To promote inclusion, equality and a strong sense of belonging, we embed the principles of No Outsiders throughout school life. Through high-quality texts and structured discussion, pupils learn to celebrate difference, challenge stereotypes and understand the importance of diversity within our community and the wider world.
We support pupils’ personal safety and emotional well-being through Protective Behaviours, teaching children to recognise their right to feel safe, identify trusted adults and understand early warning signs. This empowers pupils with practical strategies to manage difficult situations confidently.
In addition, we use The Zones of Regulation to develop emotional awareness and self-regulation skills. Children are taught to recognise and name their emotions, understand that all feelings are valid, and use appropriate strategies to regulate themselves and maintain readiness for learning.
PSHE is not confined to discrete lessons. Our values of kindness, empathy and mutual respect are woven throughout daily interactions, assemblies, restorative conversations and classroom practice. Staff model positive relationships and provide consistent language and strategies so that children develop a shared understanding of well-being and care for themselves and others.
Through this cohesive approach, we aim to ensure that every child leaves our school equipped with the knowledge, skills and character to build healthy relationships, make safe choices and contribute positively to society.
Impact
Pupils at Thomas Jolyffe Primary School are confident, polite and considerate to those around them. They have a sound understanding of the meaning and importance of our school values and how those values manifest themselves outside of the school environment. Our pupils are able to effectively communicate and are able to develop positive relationships; they leave us well-equipped, resilient and ready to successfully embrace and enjoy secondary education with a very real view of being an effective and happy contributor in today’s world.
