Hi there, year 5. We hope that you’re all ok. Find today’s tasks detailed below. Stay safe!
The next two weeks are the official Easter holidays, so we won’t be setting any home-learning for you to do. Of course, keep reading and quiz on your books with the link below. You could also practise your times tables, and keep a diary of what you’ve been doing. Have a break (of sorts), try and get out in the fresh air, and know that we are all thinking of you.
We still haven’t heard from quite a few of you, so why don’t you email us an Easter card (or pictures of you eating your Easter eggs?!). Or if you’ve not emailed us, please do, just to say hello?
Happy Easter everyone.

Hello gang! Hoping you’re all ok. It’s April Fool’s Day today! Why not try a prank on a family member?! I do remember one year, when we told all the juniors at TJ that they needed to go to the hall at break time – all the teachers went in too with stern faces. The children all looked a little worried, and then we all shouted “April Fool!” It was quite hilarious, and fortunately they all saw the funny side.

In class we have done work on identifying clauses used in sentences and have used conjunctions to create our own complex sentences.
A complex sentence = Main clause + subordinate clause/ relative clause
A Main clause will make sense on its own and needs to include a subject and a verb.
A subordinate clause will not make sense on its own and starts with a subordinate conjunction.
A relative clause adds information to the main clause and doesn’t make sense on its own.
TASK: Create 8 of your own complex sentences based on the image below, punctuate your sentences carefully.
e.g Snape paced the classroom before he announced to the class that they were learning the subtle science and exact art of potion making.
e.g Snape, who didn’t look very impressed, paced the classroom.
USE THESE SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS AND
RELATIVE PRONOUNS
After, although, because, before, as, even, if, since,
though, that, unless, until, when, whenever, where,
wherever, whether, which, while, who, why.

Spring is in the air! Mrs Woodhead found a hedgehog at the bottom of her garden the other day and Mrs Anderson has lambs peeping over her fence. Can you research an animal native to the British countryside (fox, hare, deer, etc) and write a factfile about that animal. Don’t forget to include information about their appearance, their habitat, what they eat and other interesting facts! Remember to use subheadings and paragraphs to space out your work.
As an extra challenge, you could draw a picture of your animal; there are lots of online drawing tutorials at the moment you could use to help you.

Hey there Year 5! We hope you’re all ok? It’s been lovely to hear from a few of you in the last couple of days by email. Thank you for keeping in touch!
We understand that this is a difficult time for everybody, and it is quite natural to worry about things. Take a look at this Doctor Who clip. The Doctor offers some very sensible advice:
I’ve been in contact with a care home in Stratford called Scholar Mews. The residents there are on complete lock-down and aren’t allowed visitors, so they must be very lonely. If any of you feel like writing to them, they would love it – and it would bring a smile to their faces! You could write telling them a little bit about you or what you’ve been doing this week? Draw a picture too if you like? Remember NOT to add your address, for safeguarding reasons.
If you would like to do this, then please send by post to:

Email Communication Statement
As a school we recognise the value of providing email addresses for parents to communicate non-urgent issues with members of staff. At Thomas Jolyffe teachers are free to check their emails as they wish in order to fit to their own preferred work pattern but are not expected to check while they are teaching, while they are at home, or at weekends - so response times may vary. We believe that 48 working hours is a reasonable length of time to receive a considered reply. Urgent matters are best discussed face to face or via the school office, who will ensure the message is delivered as quickly as possible. As with all messages, the meaning and tone may vary depending on who is reading it. Please consider this before choosing to email any member of staff. We would also encourage all parents to consider information sent to teachers regarding other children very carefully as this can be requested by other parents under the rules governing GDPR.
