Thomas Jolyffe Primary School

Year 5 - Mrs Anderson, Mrs Evans and Mrs Woodhead

Welcome to the Year 5 page.

Please find below the Summer newsletter for each class and topic homework.

Welcome to the Year 5 Class Page.

Unfortunately, due to the national lockdown school will be shut for all children except key workers.

During this period of isolation, your teachers will be opening a group video meeting using the Teams app at 9:30 each morning. They will  introduce you to some ideas for learning that day. Most of the lessons will be accessed using the ‘Oak Academy Remote Learning’ and links will be provided below, on this class web page to take you directly to those video lessons.

Teachers will open a second daily Teams meeting at 3:00pm each day, to talk to you about what you have been learning. You can also email Mrs Anderson, Mrs Woodhead and Mrs Evans with your questions or to share your photos or videos of your learning.

If the timing of these online meetings is not convenient for you, they will be recorded and you will be able to access them at a more suitable time.

Mrs Woodhead has been teaching at Thomas Jolyffe for 16 years. She is responsible for the RE curriculum in the school and works part time, on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Mrs Evans joined the school last year and teaches on a part time basis, on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Mrs Anderson has been teaching at Thomas Jolyffe for 13 years. She is the school's Science coordinator.

We are really pleased with how well the children have settled into Year 5 and their new routines. This term we will be focusing on the IPC topic 'Brainwaves' and learning all about French speaking countries in our topic ' Tour du Monde'. In Science, we are learning all about space and the planets.

Home learning

Maths

We will also be setting weekly Maths homework using the online programme 'MyMaths'. A new activity will be set each Thursday to be completed for the next Thursday. This will be linked to the learning we have been doing in class.  If you need another copy of their login details, please contact your child’s class teacher.

Times tables Rockstars

Being able to apply their times tables accurately and quickly is fundamental, and we would like children to be practising their times tables on at least a weekly basis. If you need another copy of their login details, please contact your child’s class teacher.

Spelling

Class 5A will continue to hand out new spellings each Friday and the children will complete their test the following Friday. In 5EW, spellings will be handed out on a Monday to be tested the following Monday.

Reading

We are expecting all children to be reading for at least 20 minutes each day. They should also be using their reading records and bringing them into school daily.  Children can access the Accelerated Reading scheme to quiz at home, by using the link on our class pages.

Email Communication Statement

As a school we recognise the value of providing email addresses for parents to communicate non-urgent issues with members of staff - especially this year where face to face contact is rare. At Thomas Jolyffe teachers are free to check their emails as they wish in order to fit to their own preferred work pattern but are not expected to check while they are teaching, while they are at home, or at weekends - so response times may vary. We believe that up to 48 working hours is a reasonable length of time to receive a considered reply. However, children who are self isolating or quarantining will be given priority. Urgent matters are best discussed via the school office, who will ensure the message is delivered as quickly as possible.

As with all messages, the meaning and tone may vary depending on who is reading it. Please consider this before choosing to email any member of staff. We would also encourage all parents to consider information sent to teachers regarding other children very carefully as this can be requested by other parents under the rules governing GDPR.

It is the expectation in Year 5 that children read for approximately 20 minutes per day at home. We are still using AR as our reading scheme, if children want to quiz at home they can do so using the link below:
We are continuing with our Times tables Rockstars, children can also access this at home using the link below:

Year 5 Weekly Timetable. Week 1 - 5th January 2021
