Thomas Jolyffe Primary School

Writing

Nowhere else in the work a child does at school is it clearer to see the breadth of their life experiences, their reading, their understanding and their empathy. At Thomas Jolyffe Primary we strive for our children to leave school already equipped with all the tools they need to be able to write successfully for the rest of their lives.

As well as the Power of Reading short-burst written challenges mentioned in our Reading section, we use a writing scheme at the very forefront of modern teaching methods. The Talk for Writing approach enables children to read and write independently for a variety of audiences and purposes within different subjects. A key feature is that children internalise the language structures needed to write through ‘talking the text’ as well as close reading. The approach moves from dependence towards independence with the teacher using shared and guided teaching to develop the ability in children to write creatively and powerfully.
