L.O. To develop an understanding of the written methods of multiplication

In this lesson you will think deeper about how to calculate the multiplication of numbers that cannot be easily done mentally. Having a go at the 'Get Ready' is particularly important today as it includes all the skills you already have and will need to use in the main part of the lesson.

Key word today: commutative. This means that a calculation can be done in any order and you will get the same answer. So addition is commutative as 2 + 6 = 8 and 6 + 2 = 8; multiplication is commutative as 2 x 6 =12 and 6 x 2 =12.

Note of advice: Question 1 please draw the place value tables and the base 10 representations in your books.  If you are using the display worksheet, when you need to calculate an answer on a number line, draw it in your books. The questions that asks you to discuss - talk to your adult helper.
