Reading

If there was only one thing that you were able to do with your child today - reading a book would be a shrewd move. The shared experiences, chances for closeness and opportunities for discussion when reading mean it is often a magical time for parents and children alike.

At Thomas Jolyffe we aim to capitalise on that same magic feeling. Our Reading strategy is based on the Power of Reading scheme by the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE). This aims for all children to have access to the highest quality literature to help embed a wide variety of Reading skills.

These principles are based on the belief that:

  • A child has a right to be literate and to enjoy literature.
  • Texts that engage children and support developing literacy are hugely important and beneficial.
  • Practice is underpinned and supported by robust classroom-based research.

Alongside this at Thomas Jolyffe we have our flagship ‘learning to read’ scheme powered by Accelerated Reader. (A short video guide is located here) Our Infant and Junior Libraries are both organised to allow children to progress in their reading using this scheme.
‘Children are captivated by their learning’, ‘The well-being of pupils is at the heart of the school’, ‘School is a calm place - pupils are polite, courteous and well-mannered’
